Struck, Tailor 60 Years, Dies
Carl Struck, 73, of 2410 South Tenth street, Manitowoc, who plied the tailoring
trade he learned from his father and brother in Germany for nearly 60 years,
died Tuesday morning.
Moving to Manitowoc in 1919 he operated two shops for a number of years and in
recent years set up a small shop in the rear of his home, to follow the trade
he started to learn as a boy of 14 years, in the far off fatherland.
Funeral services for Mr. Struck will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the first German
Evangelical Lutheran church, Manitowoc. The Rev. L. H. Koeninger will officiate
and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
He was born in Bad-Tyrmont, Germany, in 1877. He worked learning the tailoring
trade for three years without pay. In 1899 he took a course in cutting at a shop
in Munich, Germany, and after 10? years of working, traveling and study, became
a master tailor.
Mr. Struck married Miss Johanna Puellmann in 1902 and in the spring of 1914,
accompanied by his wife and four children, came to the United States. At the
suggestion of his brother in law they located in South Dakota, but did not relish
the cold of winter and dry heat of summer. In 1916 the Strucks moved to Newton,
and he commuted to Manitowoc to find work in tailoring shops.
Every day in fair weather or foul he drove his horse and buggy or cutter back and
forth over seven miles of country roads. In 1919 the family moved to Manitowoc.
He had two shops on Washington street and in recent years has operated his shop
in the rear of his home.
Mr. Struck is survived by his wife; three sons, Henry of Manitowoc, Gerhard of
Dowagiac, Mich., and Fred of Richmond, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Fred C.
Hischke of Buring, Wis., and Mrs. Norman Balge and Mrs. Wilbert Pipkorn, of
Milwaukee; sister, Mrs. Barnard Korf, in Germany and 21 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Pfeffer funeral home, after 2 p.m. Thursday. The casket
will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Friday.
