Local heritage book of EilsdorfEilsdorf is situated approximately 12 km north of Halberstadt, on the northern side of the Huys, in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. Around 330 people live there. The village is surrounded by fertile soil. The area around Eilsdorf was inhabited as early as 800 to 500 BC. This is evidenced by house and face urns found south-east of Eilsdorf in 1893. Eilsdorf was first mentioned as Achadelsdorp in 1084 in a foundation charter of the Huysburg monastery. In 1225, the village was sold to the Bishop of Halberstadt. Until then, Eilsdorf had been under the rule of the Counts of Regenstein. Eilsdorf was also known as Eilikestorp and Eilwardetorp at the time. In the following years, the ownership changed multiple times. A quarry, which was located approximately 1 km north of Eilsdorf, was first mentioned around 1600. Stones were quarried here for many centuries, which is why the profession of stonemason was often mentioned in the church records. Stone slabs from Eilsdorf can be found, for example, in the Hofkirche in Dresden. The "Sant Viti" church in the southern part of the village was consecrated in 1785. At that time, just over 300 people lived in Eilsdorf. In 1889, there was a major flood in both Eilsdorf and Anderbeck. In Anderbeck, you can still find markings on many houses indicating the water level at that time. Around 1900, around 700 people lived in Eilsdorf. Of course, the village was dominated by farming. At the beginning of the 20th century, large areas of land were leased to the seed farm of Friedrich Strube from Schlanstedt. There is also a local family register for Schlanstedt. Today, Eilsdorf belongs to the municipality of Huy, along with 10 other villages. A special feature of Eilsdorf was the stay of five young men from Japan between 1885 and 1891. The young men were of noble descent. They were preparing for studies at German universities. The family of pastor Eduard Schleiff took the young men in. Some of them were baptised here, as can be seen in the church records. A second special feature was the pastor Johann Andreas Karl (Christoph) Hildebrandt (born on April 13, 1763 in Halberstadt; died on November 25, 1846 in Eilsdorf). He officiated in Eilsdorf from 1806 to 1846. Hildebrandt is said to have written around 140 horror and ghost novels. Examples include "Maria the Girl of Daniel's Cave" (1820) and "The Mountain Spirit of the Harz Mountains" (1824). A complete list of his works can be found on Wikipedia. The spelling of surnames in Eilsdorf varied and changed repeatedly. Examples are. Bendler - Bendeler, Mörig - Mory - Möhring - Moery, Klietz - Kliez. A special case is the surname Dörge - Derge. This spelling was constantly changing back and forth, so that a correct assignment was very difficult. This local family book is intended as a research aid. It is not a binding document. In accordance with the terms of use, here is the link to the Catholic church registers: https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/deutschland/magdeburg/huysburg-maria-himmelfahrt-halberstadt/ I would be very pleased to receive any hints and additions. Good luck with your reading. Werner Reimer |
